When an option trade goes wrong, most traders look at the NIFTY chart to find out why. But you didn't trade NIFTY. You traded a specific strike of a specific expiry, and its premium moved in its own way. Time decay, volatility and distance from spot all show up in the premium. None of that is visible on the index chart.

To really learn from past trades, you need the historical chart of the option itself. This guide explains what a historical option premium chart is, why it matters, and how to use one for NIFTY, BANKNIFTY and SENSEX.

Spot chart vs option premium chart

The spot chart shows where the index went. The option chart shows what your position was worth. These two often tell very different stories.

A common example: NIFTY stays almost flat for two hours, so the spot chart looks quiet. Meanwhile an out-of-the-money call loses a big part of its value to time decay. Only the premium chart shows that loss.

1. Review your real trades

Pull up the exact strike and expiry you traded and mark your entry and exit. You'll quickly see whether you entered on a spike, exited too early, or held through decay.

2. Learn how premiums behave

Watch how an at-the-money option moves compared to an out-of-the-money one, or how premiums behave on expiry day. These patterns repeat, and once you've seen them on many past expiries you start to recognise them live.

3. Plan levels on the option, not just the index

Option premiums form their own support and resistance zones. Many traders place stop-losses based on the premium chart, because that is the price their order actually fills at.

4. Test ideas before risking money

If you believe a strategy works, check it on dozens of past expiries first. Historical charts let you do that in minutes.

How to open a historical option chart on OPIFY

The OPIFY historical options chart covers NIFTY and BANKNIFTY options from January 2023 and SENSEX options from May 2024.

2. Choose the index: NIFTY, BANKNIFTY or SENSEX.
