What is Put-Call Ratio (PCR)? How to Read PCR for NIFTY & BANKNIFTY

Learn what the Put-Call Ratio means, how to calculate it, and how to read PCR for NIFTY, BANKNIFTY and SENSEX without falling for common mistakes.

Open any NIFTY option chain and you will see thousands of contracts, lakhs of open interest and numbers changing every minute. It is easy to get lost. The Put-Call Ratio (PCR) squeezes all of that into one number that tells you how option traders are positioned right now.

In this guide you will learn what PCR is, how it is calculated, how to read it for NIFTY, BANKNIFTY and SENSEX, and the mistakes that make most traders misread it.

Quick answer: PCR = total Put open interest ÷ total Call open interest. A PCR above 1 means more puts are open than calls; below 1 means more calls are open. In Indian index options, a rising PCR usually means put writers are building support, which is read as bullish. Very high or very low readings can warn of a reversal.

What is the Put-Call Ratio?

The Put-Call Ratio compares the number of open put contracts with the number of open call contracts for the same index and expiry. It is a sentiment indicator: it does not tell you where the price will go, but it shows how the people who are actually trading options have placed their money.

There are two common versions:

  • OI PCR uses open interest (positions that are still open). This is the one most traders mean when they say "PCR", and it is more stable.
  • Volume PCR uses the number of contracts traded during the day. It reacts faster but is noisier, because a lot of intraday volume is opened and closed within minutes.

How to calculate PCR

The formula is simple:

PCR = Total Put OI ÷ Total Call OI

Here is an example with made-up numbers for one NIFTY expiry:

Open Interest (contracts)
Total Put OI (all strikes)1,20,00,000
Total Call OI (all strikes)1,00,00,000
PCR1,20,00,000 ÷ 1,00,00,000 = 1.20

A PCR of 1.20 means there are 1.2 open puts for every open call. You don't need to do this by hand. The OPIFY PCR chart calculates it from the live option chain and plots how it changes through the day.

Who is behind the open interest?

This is the part most beginners miss, and it changes how you read PCR.

Every open option contract has a buyer and a seller (writer). In Indian index options, the large positions are mostly held by option writers: institutions, prop desks and experienced traders who collect premium. Writers usually sell options at levels they believe the market will not cross.

  • When put OI rises, writers are selling puts. They are saying: "I don't think the market will fall below this level." That is support.
  • When call OI rises, writers are selling calls. They are saying: "I don't think the market will rise above this level." That is resistance.

That's why, in the Indian market, a higher PCR is usually read as bullish (more support being built), not bearish, even though "more puts" sounds negative at first.

How to read PCR values

There is no fixed rule, and the "normal" range shifts over time and from index to index. Use the zones below as a rough starting point, not as buy or sell signals.

PCR readingWhat it usually suggestsWhat to watch for
Below 0.7Heavy call writing, bearish positioningVery low readings can mean the market is oversold and due for a bounce
0.7 to 1.0Mildly bearish to neutralLook at the trend of PCR, not just the value
1.0 to 1.3Neutral to bullish, puts are supporting the marketA steady rise here with rising price is a healthy sign
Above 1.3 to 1.5Strongly bullish positioningExtreme readings can mean the market is overbought and a pullback is possible

PCR is also a contrarian indicator. When almost everyone is positioned one way, there are fewer people left to push the price further in that direction. That's why extreme readings on either side often come near short-term tops and bottoms.

The trend of PCR matters more than the number

A single PCR reading tells you very little. What matters is how it moves, and whether price agrees with it.

PCR rising with price rising

Put writers are adding positions as the market goes up. Support is moving up with the price. This is a strong, healthy uptrend.

PCR falling with price falling

Call writers are adding positions and put writers are leaving. Resistance is moving down. This is a strong downtrend.

Price and PCR moving in opposite directions

If NIFTY is making new highs but PCR is falling, the rally is not being supported by fresh put writing. Treat it as a warning, not as a sell signal by itself, and look for confirmation on the chart.

Sharp intraday jumps

A sudden move in PCR during the day often comes from large writers adjusting or covering positions. Check the change in OI chart to see which strikes caused the jump.

Use strike-wise OI with PCR

Overall PCR gives you the mood. Strike-wise open interest gives you the levels.

  1. Open the option chain or OI chart for the current expiry.
  2. Find the put strike with the highest OI. That is often treated as the nearest strong support.
  3. Find the call strike with the highest OI. That is often treated as the nearest strong resistance.
  4. Watch whether these levels shift during the day. Support moving up and resistance moving up together tells you writers are turning bullish.

Combine this with the overall PCR trend and you have a much clearer picture than either one alone.

Common mistakes traders make with PCR

  • Treating it as a buy/sell signal. PCR shows positioning. It does not tell you the entry, stop-loss or target.
  • Reading "more puts" as bearish. In Indian index options, put OI is mostly writers, so rising put OI usually means support.
  • Using one fixed threshold forever. A PCR of 1.3 may be extreme for one index in one month and ordinary in another. Compare against its own recent range.
  • Mixing expiries. The nearest weekly expiry behaves very differently from the monthly. Know which expiry your PCR is based on.
  • Ignoring expiry day. On expiry day, OI drops sharply as positions are closed, and PCR can swing wildly. It is much less reliable then.
  • Not checking price. PCR without the price chart is half the story. Always confirm with support, resistance and trend.

Practise reading PCR without risking money

The best way to build a feel for PCR is to watch it alongside real price moves, again and again. You can do that without placing real trades:

Key takeaways

  • PCR = total put OI ÷ total call OI.
  • In Indian index options, a rising PCR usually means put writers are building support.
  • Extreme readings on either side can signal a reversal.
  • The direction of PCR, and whether price agrees, matters more than any single value.
  • Use strike-wise OI to find the actual support and resistance levels.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good PCR for NIFTY?

There is no single "good" number. Readings between roughly 1.0 and 1.3 are often seen as neutral to bullish, but compare the current value with NIFTY's own recent range and look at the direction it is moving.

Is a PCR above 1 bullish or bearish?

In Indian index options it is usually read as bullish, because most put OI comes from writers who expect the market to stay above their strikes. Very high values, though, can mean the market is overbought.

Should I use OI PCR or volume PCR?

Most traders use OI PCR because it reflects positions that are still open and is less noisy. Volume PCR can be useful for spotting sudden intraday activity.

How often does PCR change?

PCR changes whenever open interest changes. On OPIFY, option chain data updates every minute, so the PCR chart shows how sentiment shifts through the day.
