Most new option traders learn with real money, and most of them lose a good part of it before they understand what went wrong. There's a better way to start: paper trading. You place trades on real market prices, track profit and loss, and build your skills without risking a rupee.

Why options especially need practice

Stocks are fairly simple: buy, and if the price goes up, you make money. Options have more moving parts:

• Time decay: premiums lose value every day, even if nothing happens.
• Volatility: premiums rise and fall with implied volatility.
• Strike choice: the same view on NIFTY can make or lose money depending on which strike you choose.
• Leverage: small index moves create large premium swings.
• Expiry: out-of-the-money options can expire worthless.

Reading about these is useful. Feeling them happen to your own position is how you actually learn them.

How to start on OPIFY

2. Choose NIFTY, BANKNIFTY or SENSEX.

4. Select a strike and expiry from the option chain and place your order.

A 4-week practice plan

Week 1: Single options

Buy only ATM calls and puts. Watch how premium reacts to index moves and to time passing.

Week 2: Stop-losses and targets

Set a fixed stop-loss and target before every trade. Track how often each is hit.

Try a bull call spread or bear put spread. Notice how selling one leg reduces both risk and decay.

Week 4: Review

Look at all your trades. What was your win rate? Your average win vs average loss? Which mistakes repeated?

When are you ready for real money?

There's no fixed rule, but good signs are:

• You've placed at least 30–50 practice trades.
• You follow your stop-loss without exception.
• Your average loss is smaller than your average win.
• You can explain why each trade won or lost.

Even then, start live with the smallest size and grow slowly.
